The Alumni Association of Salesian College Siliguri in collaboration with Women’s cell of the college has organised an awareness creation programme “A step towards safety – Self security and road safety” in the college campus. This programme is in support of UN Women initiative “Orange the world- end violence against women and girls“ which is being observed all over the globe from 25 November to 10 December 2016.

Keeping in view the increasing crime and violence against women and young girls of the society along with escalating tendency of rough driving among the young girls while most them do not wear any safety gear, the Salesian College and its Alumni Association members have felt the immediate need of creating awareness among the girls about the safety measures to be followed for self security and road safety.

Smt. C.S. Lepcha, IPS the Commissioner of Police, Siliguri has graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and has inaugurated the programme. Hundred numbers of orange coloured balloons were released by the participants and invitees to spread the message “End violence against women and girls”. Additional DCP of Siliguri Metropolitan Police Mr. Arindam Sarkar and OC Women’s Cell Ms. Mumtaz Begam were also present in the occasion.

Ms. Pratima Joshi, the Secretary of Siliguri Nari Shakti was the resource person for the session on ‘Self security’ and Mr. Sunil Yadav, DCP of Siliguri Traffic Police instructed the girls about safety measures to be followed while driving.

The College is honoring the initiative of UN women by illumination of orange coloured lights in the whole campus for three days.
The programme was followed by a pledge taking ceremony and signature campaign against violence on women and girls.

Fr. Mathew Pullingathill the Rector, Fr. C.J. George the Vice Principal, Fr. Aju Kurian the Campus Minister, Ms. Ganga Parajuli the Coordinator of Women’s Cell, Ms. Priyamrita Chatterjee the Alumni Coordinator, Chanchal Agarwal the President of Salesian College Siliguri Alumni Association along with office bearers and members of the association were present.
